　　Intheshortstory，theappearanceoftheeggisalwaysassociatedwiththefortuneofthefather.Sotheegghasthemostsymbolicmeaningforhisfather.Whenheacceptedhismother’ssuggestiontosetupachickenfarm，theeggistherisingoftheAmericandream.Hebelievessthateveryonewhoworkshardcanbeinwealth.Thenwhenthehensinthefarmbecamesickanddied，“ourhopesforsomuchfromachickenandissodreadfullydisillusioned，”theeggisthebrokenAmericandream.Afterthefarmbusinesswasfail，thefatherstartedtoputthegrotesqueeggsintheglassbottle，regardingthemashisfortune.Atthismoment，theeggisthefreakyAmericandream.

　　Mentioningthesymbolicmeaningsoftheegg，Itendtoviewitfromthemother’s，thefather’sandthenarrator’sangle.SherwoodAndersonadoptedtheboy’spointofviewtomakeusnoticemore.Childhoodshouldbenaiveandhappy，butthischildcouldnotfeelanyhappinessafterhavingwitnessedsomanydeathsandgrotesques.Andhewasdeeplyinvolvedinthedreadfulcycle.The“egg”washarmfultothenextgenerationaswellastoadults.Iftheyfailedtoabandonit，thedreadfulcyclewouldbecontinuingfromgenerationtogeneration.ThegrotesqueconditioncreatedthefailureorunhappinessofmostAmericans.Onlyafterthewholesocietyestablishestherightvalue，canthepeoplewhopursuitstheAmericandreamgetclosertoit.
